Resources

Here are some resources I recommend for learning German.

1) A text book.

There are many textbooks available online.

One source is the University of Minnesota's open Textbook Library
https://open.umn.edu/opentextbooks

You can also get free and paid text books from Amazon.

You can also simply Google and get some books.

2) YouTube

YouTube allows you to get three very useful things:

  • You can find videos with native German speakers for you to listen to.
  • You can get actual lessons on various language topics.
  • You can listen to songs, both children's songs and regular songs. I mention children's songs because these are normally geared towards teaching language and basic concepts in German, and so are an easy way to learn vocabulary.
3) AI Platforms

An AI platform such as ChatGPT is like a free personal tutor.

Here are some things you can do:

  • ask specific questions on a topic
  • ask for word list of any category, such as the 100 most common words in IT)
  • ask for short stories at a particular language level
  • ask for exercises to practise something you have learnt

and so on.

Spaced Repetition Scheduler

Spaced Repetition is a learning method or schedule where you study something, then repeat or review the material at certain intervals, hence the name spaced repetition. One schedule is learning something on Day 0, then reviewing it after 1 day, then on Day 3, Day 7 and Day 14. Some people suggest also adding Day 30 and Day 90, to ensure the material is locked in long-term memory. A challenge that may arise in trying to implement such a schedule is that it can be a lot of work keeping track of when to review each topic. For this reason, I developed a simple scheduler to track review dates.  It works as follows: Open the scheduler in your browser. Type in the topic that you covered. Select the date when you first covered the topic. Click a Generate button. The scheduler then places the topic on the calendar dates when you should review it. That's it. So now you only need to look at the calendar and you will se exactly what you should review. Click here to get a copy of the scheduler...
